Good morning Steve,

Just wanted you to know I finally got Claude to work! I deleted everything and restarted fresh following your "day one through four" process. Claude finally started looking at my sample files and telling me what it saw and proposed some areas to explore.

Thanks for the assist and providing the step-by-step instructions!

Is anyone using the Claude Code for desktop? With this version, did you use "git init" so Claude could read your files in the folder? Or do all the files need to be in the ".md" format? If this is the case, how do I turn images into .md files? I am new to coding and would greatly appreciate any guidance.

Hello Rhonda,

Only the CLAUDE.md file uses the .md extension. Your sample files should sport a common naming convention. Steve suggests the following convention: SURNAME,Given-Middle_DD-MMM-YYYY_File-Description_State-County-City. Save the CLAUDE.md file in the records folder where your genealogy copied files exist (NOTE: Please ensure these files are copied from your original genealogical research, not cut and pasted).

In Claude Code desktop app, ensure you are in the Code section of the app (see image below). In the "Select Folder" dropdown selection tool, point Claude to your records folder where the CLAUDE.md file exists. Then ask the simple question, "What do you see?" It should then identify the records in the records folder and present to you its findings.

If you still have issues, please let me know.
